The way you interview someone can change who they become.
Most people who join Talroo have heard something like this during their interview:
“I feel you can bring new perspectives to Talroo.”
I say this to someone who sees a problem differently from the way I do.
“I feel we can count on you.”
I say this to someone who understands accountability without making everything about themselves.
We make offers fast, we pay well.
And our offers are usually accepted within days.
Behind all of this is an implicit message:
I am not looking to fill a headcount. I want a partner.
For a long time, I saw our results as evidence that we were good at identifying exceptional people.
I see it differently now.
Selection is only part of what happens in an interview.
While we are learning who the candidate is, the candidate is learning who we believe they can become.
Before someone has fully proven themselves, I try to give them trust and respect while setting high expectations.
Something interesting happens when people are treated like partners:
They often begin behaving like partners.
We cannot hire people as interchangeable labor and expect them to become owners.
Today, about 80% of Talroo’s managers were promoted from within.
I believe that is evidence we are doing something right.
Hiring is more than mutual selection.
It is the first opportunity to uncap someone’s potential.
