The Feral Pig Test: Why Responsibility Is the Scarcest Thing You Can Hire For

Release a farm pig into the wild, and it becomes almost unrecognizable in weeks.

Its body grows leaner. Its coat becomes coarser. Its tusks become more prominent. It becomes alert to every sound.

Life becomes much harder.

But the pig rises to the challenge.

It didn't acquire new genes.

It acquired responsibility for its own survival.

Biologists call this feralization.

For humans, this transformation is called independence.

Independence is not merely having skills or living without assistance.

It begins when you understand:

My survival is my responsibility.

That realization changes you.

You become more vigilant because the consequences are now real.

You stop playing identity theater because appearances don’t make payroll.

You think further ahead because someone must still be there after the enthusiasm wears off.

And when other people’s survival depends on you, independence matures into stewardship.

Some acquire it through entrepreneurship. Others through combat, immigration, parenthood, crisis, or years of carrying an institution.

The path differs. The transformation is the same.

Responsibility changes how you see the world, and how you work.

Traditionally, companies hired people for their labor: their time, skills, and ability to execute.

AI is accelerating execution.

But responsibility remains scarce.

The people who create the most value will increasingly be those who can recognize what matters, take ownership of an outcome, and carry its consequences.

So when hiring, I would ask:

Has this person ever been responsible for an outcome they could not delegate?
